How To Ensure The Right Homeschool Curriculum For Your Kid

So you are opting for providing your children with a home schooled education. Wonderful for you! Kids who gain their education in the comforts of their home have proven to have better results on tests and with their grades, do better in college and among the work force. Families that opt for homeschooling have a closer bond than those who don’t. Leaving your reasons for homeschooling aside, do you know what kind of curriculum you want to use? Have you gained some knowledge about the kinds of options and approaches that are available? Making a decision on the option for homeschooling curriculum doesn’t have to be a trying matter. If you conduct some research, you should be able to formulate a curriculum that is beneficial to you and your children. Here are some things you can contemplate.

One type of curriculum that might interest you is called unschooling, this type is much more relaxed. This is a type of curriculum that focuses on your kids’ natural instincts and interests and lets them sort of build their own curriculum or educate themselves. Really it’s not schooling at all since that term refers to a lesson plan and curriculum. Unschooling lets the kids decide what they want to learn and how they want to learn it. You as the parent can take a hands off approach to their learning. Applying for scholarships, college admissions and SAT’s can be a challenge with this method despite the fact that many parents have great success with it.

Another curriculum to try is the Diane Lockman Authentic Classical Trivium which is become well respected these days. This curriculum is popular in the christian community. Don’t let the name fool you, just because it says classical trivium in the name doesn’t mean it actually follows classical education archetypes. The education in this method focuses on thought, language and speech. Teaching your children with freedom to help your kids in these three areas will be the reason you’ll like this one.

When trying to figure out how to home school your kids and how to choose homeschooling curriculum, you need to think about a lot of things. The style of learning that best suits your child is at the top of that list. Your teaching style, strengths, and weaknesses are another factor to keep in mind. The nice thing is that you have more freedom to play to your own strengths and weaknesses as you put together your curriculum each year. As a matter of fact, you won’t need to stick to strict curriculum units allowing you to play to everyone’s strengths.

You may choose to home school your kids for any number of reasons. Perhaps you don’t like your local public schools. Perhaps you don’t have the money for private school tuition. Maybe you’ve read the studies saying that home schooled kids perform better later in life. But no matter why you’ve decided to home school, make sure that you are getting a good curriculum. The importance of the curriculum you choose cannot be stressed enough. Learn all that you can to ensure you are choosing the right one for you and your family.

This is so important. Without teaching your kids the right things, you are setting them up for a future of failure.
