The Importance Of Being a Grandparent

Grandparents and Grandchildren

There are so many aspects to being a grandparent. The emotion is hard to identify when seeing your child have a child of their own.

Recently I attended the funeral of Marie Grammar, a woman who lived to be almost 101 years of age. She talked with her grandchildren and great grandchildren about the two things she loved most – her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and her family. One of her great grandchildren spoke at the funeral and said, “My GrandNaNa told me to get an education and to love Jesus! She had a big impact on my life.”

As I stood at the graveside, I was reminded of how my daughter Julie was strongly influenced by my Mother to get an education and become a teacher. As my Mother was living her final days on earth, Julie came to visit her in the hospital. As she was deciding whether to go back to school or stay with her grandmother, my Mom said to her, “Go back to school and complete what you have started. You will be a great teacher and a blessing to all the children you spend time with in the classroom.” My Mom didn’t have the opportunity to see Julie graduate, but I’ve seen how powerful the words of a grandparent are as I watch my daughter live out her dream of being a teacher and the many ways her students have been impacted by her life.

As a grandparent myself, I am experiencing firsthand how my words have a huge impact on my grandchildren. Words can show love and acceptance or cause pain and defeat in the life of a child.

Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Speaking words of life to your grandchildren will show God’s heart toward them and will give a desire and confidence to live a life that loves and serves God.

What does God want you to say to your grandchildren today that will bring life to them?
